Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long is a training session?
A: All sessions are one hour long, for the attention span of the dog. Sessions can run a bit longer, at the trainer's discretion. Any additional time, at the trainer's discretion, carries no additional fee for up to thirty minutes.
Q: Will you work with dogs of any breed, age, or size?
A: Yes. Puppies tend to learn faster than older dogs, and some breeds respond to training more easily than others. However, we work with your dog's individual drive and needs. We work with their nature to help them learn in the way that works best for them.
Q: Do you use punishment as a training technique?
A: No. We strive for learner-centered, minimally stressful, and thoughtful training sessions with all dogs. We use positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement based on the most current dog training and behavior science. Positive reinforcement is the most humane way to achieve training goals, and it works faster than other training methods because it increases the odds of the dog learning the skills required. To Rehabilitate dogs from negative habits, we utilize redirection or mild corrections that imitate those corrections given by their mother. We NEVER spank, hit, choke, or harm the dog. We get their attention through the mild touch (mentioned earlier) to redirect behavior. We also withhold reward (positive reinforcement) and guide the dog to make the right decisions to achieve the reward.
Q: How frequently should I schedule Dog Training Appointments?
A: There are many different schools of thought on this topic. Here is an excellent article on the subject, https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/canine-corner/201309/what-type-training-schedule-works-best-dogs. But, it depends on your training objectives. Is your greatest concern expense (smallest number of sessions: usually 2 sessions per week), speed of training (trained thoroughly by this date), or something else? Address these concerns when you make your appointment and we will help you to accomplish your goals!
Q: What is your #1 Training & Rehabilitation tip?
A: Catch your dog doing the right thing! We usually catch our dogs chewing shoes or after they have had an accident in the house. Catch your dog when they are chewing on their toy, instead of your slippers, or when they are being gentle with your children! Reward your dog (usually treats, but whatever your dog values) when it is behaving the way you want!
